Pharmacogenomic Testing

Are your medications right for YOU?

Have you ever wondered why a medication worked for someone else but not for you? Or why you’ve experienced side effects from a medication but others taking the same medication did not? Pharmacogenomic testing may be able to provide you with the answer.

Genes are portions of your DNA that determine physical characteristics like eye colour but can also tell us the rate at which you process medications. Variations or differences in your DNA make each person unique. Pharmacogenomic testing determines how your genes affect your response to medications.

Now available in Ontario at Emerald Pharmacy is the OneOme RightMed pharmacogenomic (PGx) test. It is easily performed at the pharmacy and it provides you with a detailed report about your genes that can be shared with your physician. The results can guide physicians as to which prescription drugs are or are not likely to work for you and help choose the appropriate dose.

OneOme’s PGx test was co-developed with the Mayo Clinic in the United States and can give results related to 28 medical conditions and over 340 medications. The results can be used to assess current prescription medications and can assist physicians when writing future prescriptions.

The results of the pharmacogenomic test can help avoid interactions, avoid or reduce side effects and help physicians prescribe the most appropriate prescription medication.  It saves time and money by reducing or eliminating trial and error in finding the right drug. Anyone can take the PGx test, but those who see the most benefit are those with:

  • Medications that are not working

  • Unwelcome side effects and adverse reactions

  • Multiple prescription medications

  • Chronic pain or one or more of 28 other medical conditions

Anyone can potentially find the answers they’ve been searching for; this test is personalized and can affect current and future prescription medications. One size doesn’t fit all!
